Review of Aman Homestay, A Boutique Hotel in Agra.

Our run of hotels had not exactly been great in India. We had been tricked with false reviews; we had stayed in some terrible places and were made to feel very uncomfortable by the staff in some hotels. Did we experience the same at the Aman Homestay in Agra? Read on for our review of Aman Homestay, a boutique hotel in Agra.

Location of Aman Homestay in Agra.

Located at P-18, MIG Colony, Shilpgram Road  which is a quiet side street in a residential area of Agra. It is around a 20 minute walk from the east Gate of the Taj Mahal.

Getting to the Aman Homestay.

Aman Homestay is located around 20 minutes by car from the train station and the airport. Like most major cities in India, there are plenty of taxis’ and tuk-tuks. However, as we were arriving late at night after a long train journey from Jaipur, we decided we didn’t want to play games with the taxi/tuk-tuk drivers in the city and decided to contact the Homestay and arrange for someone to collect us at the station.

The station was absolutely crazy when we arrived, and after a couple of phone calls the fella collecting us found us. Walked us through the mob of drivers and got us into the car before driving us to the Homestay. The driver was a friendly lad who told us many things to do and see in the area. Before we knew it we had arrived at the homestay.

Check in.

While the homestay usually has a check-in time, the staff at Aman Homestay were fully prepared for our late arrival. When we arrived, they were ready and waiting, making the check-in process quick and efficient. It was like being picked up in a whirlwind (a nice one), as within moments of arriving, we were checked in and heading to our rooms. This was an amazing experience, as we have found check in at most Indian hotels can be a long dragged out experience at any time of the day.

The staff made it clear that if we needed anything, we just had to ask. They also checked in on us using WhatsApp, asking how we were doing any time we passed them. A major positive for me was being able to grab a cold beer from their fridge after a very long train journey.

Bedroom.

The room we got at Aman Homestay was spotless. It came with a double/single bed, a large TV, a small table, free water, and the bright, colourful lights that you would expect in this area of India.

The bathroom was spotless as well; it was equipped with a shower and, to Nicola’s relief, a sit-down toilet and not one but two toilet rolls. This was a gift from the gods, as she was experiencing a really bad dose of Delhi belly.

The only downside for me was there were no windows in the room, but otherwise it met our needs and was quiet and comfortable. The only issue we had was a broken TV remote. It wasn’t a big deal, and we just mentioned it as we were leaving for the day. However, when we returned, we found a brand new TV and remote in our room with an apology note. We didn’t expect this, or even need it replaced, but this just shows the level of care that the staff provide.

Breakfast.

While I can’t personally comment on the breakfast since I don’t eat in the mornings, Nicola and Megan enjoyed their experience. They enjoyed sitting around the table with other guests and the staff, creating a friendly atmosphere. The homestay offered a mix of both Western and local dishes, all cooked to order. Nicola and Megan both gave their meals a thumbs up.

WiFi.

We had zero issues with the WiFi during our stay at the Aman Homestay. It was probably one of the strongest and most reliable connections we had in our time in India. It was strong enough to surf the web, write blog posts, and for Nicola to work on Cambly, which typically requires a strong connection.

Rooftop.

This was a nice touch—a nice area to sit upstairs and away from the hustle and bustle of street level. Myself and Megan sat up here for a few hours each night while Nicola worked. We spent the time playing cards and seeing if we could spot the Taj Mahal on the horizon.

Location.

Our main reason for visiting Agra was to see the Taj Mahal. Since we arrived late and were advised to visit the Taj Mahal first thing in the morning, we chose Aman Homestay due to its location. It turned out to be an excellent decision. The homestay was just a 5-minute walk from the east gate shuttle park, where buses took you the rest of the journey for free.

There were plenty of food options in the area; we would recommend Bamboo Cafe directly behind the homestay. If you wanted to go further afield, there were friendly tuk-tuk drivers who sat outside the homestay all day and night, taking you wherever you wanted in Agra.

The fact it is also on a side street in a residential area meant it was a lot quieter than being on the main road. It also meant that Megan could get out and play football with the local kids.

Overall, Aman Homestay’s location, combined with its quiet atmosphere and easy access to local amenities, made it an ideal choice for our visit to the Taj Mahal.

Overall thoughts on Aman Homestay, A Boutique Hotel in Agra.

We spent two nights at the Aman Homestay and then one night at the nearby Radisson Hotel. The only reason we switched to the Radisson was because it had a pool, and Nicola, who was still feeling very unwell, needed some downtime to recover. If Aman Homestay had a pool, we would have stayed there for the third night as well. The staff at Aman Homestay were incredibly friendly, helpful, and always willing to have a chat. One of my favourite moments was when the tuk-tuk driver gathered the whole street to play football with Megan! The place was spotless, well-stocked with toilet paper (a huge relief for Nicola), and perfectly located. I would highly recommend staying here, whether you’re travelling as a family, couple, with friends, or solo—it’s simply perfect.
