New York Knicks – Family night out

As soon as I booked our flights to New York, I got straight down to the important bit … finding some sports to watch in the one and only, Madison Square Garden.  First thing I found was ice hockey, but as I work in a bank and don’t own one, that was out of the question!

My persistence paid off and I struck gold when I found some tickets for a family night out, to watch the New York Knicks. Tickets were not cheap, but we’re talking the Knicks at MSG – so in a couple of clicks, they were mine!

Match Night

We had dinner and a few pints of Five Boroughs in our local, before making our way over to MSG. En route we bumped into the Easter Bunny, who was hanging out on a street near our apartment.

We took the subway to Herald Square Station, which was a short walking distance from the arena.

Entry was simple. Everyone entered via the same doors, went through security, and then stewards guided us to our block.

There was plenty going on in the concourse, but we had left it a bit late and wanted to get seated for the pre-game show.

After finding our seats, Nicola went to get some popcorn and beers. We then settled down to watch the cheerleaders, and the game.

Game Time

Basketball is fast paced, easy to follow, and didn’t drag on for hours like baseball, which meant it wasn’t too hard keeping Nicola and Megan from falling asleep!

If you have ever watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Out of the Shadows, then like Megan, you will remember that one of the turtles drops a slice of pizza from the big screen!  During stoppages the guys came out to clean the court. Megan thought it was because pizza had fallen and was so excited. Unfortunately, there was no sign of the famous four!

The game  finished 73-97 to Orlando Magic. I have no idea if that is a good score or not, but I enjoyed watching, and unlike the ice hockey a few nights before, no one moved until the breaks, which meant our view wasn’t constantly disrupted.

Nearby

After the game, we decided to head up to see Times Square all lit up for the evening. Megan was in awe at all the bright lights and people moving about.

We then made the journey back to Brooklyn, which seemed a lot harder, and longer late at night than it did during the day.

Top Tips

1. Hunt around for cheap matches; as with most things weekends are much more expensive than mid week.

2. Don’t turn your nose up at seats towards the back, the view is good no matter where you sit.

3. Pints are expensive – but so is the water, and I know which one I’d rather sip on.
