While travelling we always look for experiences outside of the usual tourist ones. During a visit to New York, we decided to take our love of street art to the next level and booked a graffiti lesson with Graff Tours.
Graffiti Lesson Details.
Location:
The lesson takes place at 282 Meserole Street Bushwick, Brooklyn. The closest subway station is the Montrose L Train, which is a 5 minute walk away.
Price:
$40 per person, for an hour long lesson. Book in advance on the Graff Tours website.
What to expect:
On arrival we were greeted by our tutor for the class – Eddie. Eddie brought us up to the studio where we waited for the rest of the class to arrive. While waiting, Eddie gave us a few books to flick through showing some of his work from the 70s through to the present day.
Once everyone had arrived Eddie gave us a bit of background information on himself – where he was from, what got him involved in graffiti, and why he still does it to this day.
After the intro we got down to business. We began by learning the basics, like how to write your name, draw shapes, and filling in without any drips.
Once we got the basics, it was time to create our own masterpieces. Before you go, the one thing I would recommend, is to have an idea in your head of what you want to do. (Don’t go crazy, you only have an hour!) We opted for our surname, and the Manhattan skyline. During the lesson, Eddie gave us hints and tips on how to improve our work, helping us select the right colours, and teaching us techniques, and different letter styles!
Before we knew it, our hour was up and all that was left to do was wait for the paint to dry before we could take home our handiwork!
If you have time and want to extend your lesson, Graff Tours offers graffiti tours in the area.
Would we recommend?
Yes, we absolutely loved it and would recommend it to anyone. Our class was a mixture of ages, so don’t think it is only for children.
Thank you for taking the time to read our graffiti lesson at Graff Tours.
